Åland was by far my favorite go-to always visit shop when I was in Myeongdong which is why I was so happy when i found other branches around the country. |

Like all countries in the world, Korea is touched by violence. Despite its largely restricted and controlled gun policies acts, shooting sprees still occur. An elderly man turned the gun on his brother and brothers wife as the country's second deadly shooting rampage in three days.
On a personal perspective, when I visited South Korea it seemed to me that most people felt like their nation was above the common violence that takes place in the United States and other countries. But to me, I saw the same amount of violence instituted in different ways. In Korea there are strict laws against drugs and guns but unfortunately brutality is innate and a part of every ethnicity and can happen with our without other influences. There's that saying that goes something along the lines of "learn something new every day." Today, I definitely hit that quota after reading Buzzfeed's in-depth article on [Chinese-]American Actress Anna May Wong. Honestly, I had never heard of her before today, and I am not alone. (Probably why Buzzfeed chose to start their headline with 'Forgotten Story' derrrr)
In the article, I found out (unsurprisngly) that back in "the day" Anna would not have been allowed in society, even to parties attended by other stars who exoticized and imitated her. Apparently Ms. Wong jumped at the chance to move to Europe where she could take on roles that didn't have her quite as strongly branded as "Oriental," especially in comparison to her American roles. Unfortunately, I only see little glimpses into the change of exoticizing non-white actors in American TV/Movies. I do however, think that will be a big movement for the next generation of Hollywoodians (?? is that a thing???) I also like how the article discusses identity, going back and forth between is she Chinese? (check out those features!) or American? (she's never even been to China!!). I definitely still hear small slips from both sides of that equation today. And have since a few days ago. Apparently after visiting factories over the summer KJU fractured his ankle, then fractured his other ankle when he did not follow RICE. No, not that he was eating too much rice but that he did not Rest, Ice, Compress, and Elevate.
In my opinion, this does not take away the factor of his weight. How did he fracture his ankle in the first place? hmm? The Korean Central TV used his state of health for propaganda showing him carrying heavy loads, narration saying "his whole body is drenched in sweat, but he does not stop working hard, instead showing concern for the health of the other workers." Someone please find me a spoon for which I can use to gag myself. Eyes are actually stuck in the back of my head from that roll. Girls Generation, one of the more popular groups in an already popular genre, is losing member Jessica Jung. Jung was a leading vocalist in the group and is leaving because of what WSJ calls "disagreements over her business activities in fashion."
Apparently, she had already announced her retirement from the group earlier this year and founded Blanc Group, a fashion business. On September 28, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to thousands of viewers on his vision for "twenty-first century India and the world." He also credited the success of India to the Indian-American community, bringing it from a country stereotyped by snake charmers to, what Modi claims, "the world's youngest country and its most ancient culture."
The next YP I want to honor on this stalker series is Jenny. Also, a fellow Fulbright (I promise, this wont be a pattern. I do have other people in mind) who started a spin off of a similar project where Chinese citizens had their photos taken with their thoughts. Korean Students Speak (KSS) was created so students can creatively voice their own opinion.
English is not just a test subject. It is a language, a means to express and engage. According to NKNews, Kim Jong Un did not appear for the second session of the 13th Supreme People's Assembly and has been missing from the public eye for three weeks.
News of American detainees in North Korea has taken over the headlines this summer, and today marked the beginning of Matthew Miller's sentenced hard labor. While there are three detainees that we know of in North Korea, there are possibly still prisoners of war from the Korean War. Two are detained for acts of missionary work and on September 14th, Matthew Miller was charged for disrupting the peace and given 6 years of hard labor. The State Department’s website is very clear when it strongly recommends against all travel by U.S. citizens to North Korea. Yet tourism groups like Koryo and Uri Tours bring over as many as 5000 to 6000 Western tourists every year. When a tourist or missionary gets caught by the North Korean regime, what should the role of the U.S. government be?
We learned from the autumnal post that Koreans often bring snacks and drinks on their hiking trips. Kimbap is a healthy and adaptable. There are many ingredients that can be substituted, added or removed.
Personally, I hate eggs. All of them. I mean, think about it. Don't think too hard though because someone has to eat them! I usually suck it up when it comes to kimbap but when I'm making it at home, those babies are not included. I've adapted the recipe below from maangchi. Feel free to make your own adaptions! |
